ZA SLOBODU PRE ADNRA CHICHINADZE

Dear Prosecutor General
Giorgi Gvarakidze
Prosecutor General of Georgia,
24 Gorgasali Street,
0134 Tbilisi,
Georgia

Andro Chichinadze is a 29-year-old Georgian actor who was sentenced to two years in prison on 3 September 2025, following his participation in pro-European protests in Tbilisi. He and 10 other protesters were convicted after an unfair trial on politically motivated charges of “participation in group mass disturbance.” Prior to the conviction, Andro had already spent more than eight months in pre-trial detention, following an unjust remand hearing.

He was arrested in December 2024, along with the other protesters, and charged under Article 225 of Georgia’s Criminal Code (“participation in group violence”). The court imposed detention as a blanket measure on all 11 individuals, denying them bail without properly considering the specifics of the case or the prosecution’s arguments.

The main evidence against Andro is a video that appears to show him throwing a stick during the protest. However, the authorities have failed to demonstrate where the object landed or what harm, if any, it caused. Crucially, the prosecution has not established that Andro’s actions were premeditated, coordinated, or part of a larger plan—all of which are necessary to meet the legal definition of “group

violence.”

Andro is one of several artists and activists being targeted by the Georgian authorities as part of a broader crackdown on dissent and artistic freedom. Amnesty International is calling for the quashing of the unfair convictions and for Andro’s immediate release pending a fair retrial.
